The Consulate of Latvia in New York, together with the Baltic American Chamber of Commerce and European-American Chamber of Commerce in the U.S. invite you to attend a roundtable discussion with Latvia's Prime Minister, Mr. Krisjanis Karins during his inaugural visit to New York since taking office earlier this year.
PM Kariņš will address a number of topics including the political outlook in Europe following the recent EU Parliament elections, state of transatlantic relations, Latvia's ongoing efforts to strengthen societal resilience, Latvia’s strong economic performance and the government's priorities to enhance Latvia's attraction as a business destination and recent reforms in Latvia's financial sector. A Q&A session will follow the PM's opening remarks.
The Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš was born in Wilmington, Delaware to parents who had emigrated from Latvia during the Soviet occupation. He graduated the University of Pennsylvania, obtaining a PH.D. in linguistics.
He moved to Latvia in 1997 and established frozen foods business. He was elected to the Latvian Parliament in 2002 and served as Minister for Economics from 2004 to 2006. In 2009 K. Kariņš was elected to the European Parliament, where has served as MEP for almost ten years. His priorities in the European Parliament have been related to the AML and energy policy issues. Since January 2019 K.Kariņš is the Prime Minister of Latvia in a five-party coalition government. Following the European Parliament elections in May, the European People's Party nominated K.Kariņš as one of the chief-negotiators to direct the discussions on filling the European Commission’s presidency and nearly all of the EU's top jobs.
